How to Play Set
How to play Set
Set is played with cards that vary in four properties: shape (oval, squiggle, diamond), color (red, green, purple), shading (solid, striped, empty) and number (one, two or three symbols). A valid Set is three cards where, for each of the four properties, the values are either all the same or all different.
In the daily puzzle you are dealt 12 cards and must find 6 Sets as fast as you can. Play today's free daily Set puzzle or read the full how to play guide.
What makes a valid Set?
Pick any three cards. Check each of the four properties in turn — shape, color, shading and number. For every property the three cards must be either all the same or all different. If even one property has two cards matching and one different, it is not a Set.
Examples
- Three red cards, all ovals, all solid, showing 1, 2 and 3 symbols — a Set (number all different, everything else all same).
- One red, one green, one purple card, each a different shape, each a different shading, all showing two symbols — a Set (three properties all different, number all same).
- Two red cards and one green card — not a Set (color is two-and-one).
Strategy tips
- Fix two cards; the third card that completes a Set is uniquely determined — scan for it.
- Group cards by number first — it is often the fastest property to eliminate.
- In Diablo mode, track relative positions because the board reshuffles every 30 seconds.
